When it comes to discrimination, the numbers are even starker. According to Pew survey data collected in 2017, almost 80 percent of white liberals believed that âracial discrimination is the main reason why many black people canât get ahead these days.â56 Just over 18 percent of them agreed that âblacks who canât get ahead in this country are mostly responsible for their own condition.â57 Among blacks, however, the numbers are quite different: Just 60 percent identified discrimination as the main impediment to African American economic mobility, while 32 percent said blacks are responsible for their condition.
Most amazing is a CNN poll conducted in 2006 and again in 2015.58 The poll found that in the intervening nine years, the number of white Democrats who answered yes when asked if they knew anyone they would consider racist rose by 19 percent, from 45 percent in 2006 to 64 percent in 2015. Meanwhile, the number of nonwhite Democrats who said they knew someone they would consider racist dropped, from 50 percent to 42 percent. So, while nonwhites are seeing fewer and fewer racists, liberal whites are seeing more and more of them. These numbers are shown in the following graph, which Goldberg plotted based on the CNN poll.
